Nothing Can Beat These Super Bowl Moments
Since its inception in 1966, the Super Bowl has grown to become one of the most anticipated events in the NFL calendar. The final playoff game to decide the NFL champion draws in millions of viewers worldwide, who tune in to watch the match and the halftime show, which features several seasoned musicians.
Over the years, the Super Bowl has given fans loads of memorable moments, from underdogs causing upsets to heroes being born. Here are the greatest moments in the history of the NFL's biggest game of the season.
The Manning - Manningham Connection: Super Bowl XLVI
Super Bowl XLVI produced one of the greatest moments in NFL history; the game was not only feisty and intriguing, but the players also brought their A-game (as expected) and did not disappoint. With the Patriots confident of clinching the title leading the New York Giants 17-14, Eli Manning and Mario Manningham produced a brilliant play that changed the events.
With only three minutes left on the clock, Manning produced arguably the best pass the NFL has seen, finding Manningham on a third-and-4 play for 36 yards which shifted the game's momentum. As a result, the Giants emerged 21-17 winners over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.
Butler Cut-off: Super Bowl XLIX
The Super Bowl is usually full of drama, whether during the game or the halftime show; chances are you'll get something to remember from the event. During Super Bowl XLIX, the Seattle Seahawks were on their way to defend the championship but fumbled (literally) when they made a call to pass the ball instead of handing it to Marshawn Lynch.
New England Patriots Malcolm Butler produced the most fantastic interception in NFL history from that clumsy play by the Seahawks in the last minute. The interception clinched the title for the Patriots, who defeated their opponents by 28-24.
Julian Edelman’s Fantastic Catch: Super Bowl I
Super Bow LI is considered one of the greatest games in NFL history, and it's easy to see why. The Atlanta Falcons were well on their way to clinching the title, leading the New England Patriots 28-3. Yet, somehow, the Patriots completed the largest comeback in Super Bowl history to emerge 34-28 winners.
The Patriots' triumph wouldn't have been possible without the brilliant play from Julian Edelman, who retrieved a ball under pressure from three Atlanta players before it hit the ground. That moment changed the game and ensured the Patriots won Super Bowl I, the first and only Super Bowl to be won in overtime.
James Harrison's 100 Yards Interception: Super Bowl XLIII
While James Harrison's performance in the Super Bowl XLIII was overshadowed by the incredible title-winning pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Santonio Holmes, he still played a significant role in Pittsburgh Steelers' win. The player intercepted a 100-yard return pass from Arizona Cardinals' Kurt Warner, which ensured that the Steelers went into the halftime 17-7 leaders.
The interception ultimately changed the game, as Harrison powered through five tacklers and his team pulled one over the Cardinals, winning Super Bowl XLIII by 27-23.
David Tyree's Clever Helmet Play: Super Bowl XLII
Super Bowl XLII was an excellent game for several reasons; the New York Giants, despite their name, were considered the underdogs when they came up against the New England Patriots. Even so, the Giants caused one of the greatest upsets in NFL history, emerging 17-14 victors over the Patriots.
While the match had countless memorable moments, the one that stood out was between Eli Manning and David Tyree. Manning played a sweet pass downfield and connected with Tyree, who pressed the ball against his helmet and firmly held and kept it from hitting the ground. All this happened while Patriots' defender Rodney Harrison dragged him down. That was a fantastic play that changed the game's momentum, and four plays later, the Giants completed the master stroke.
The Super Bowl will always be one of the greatest sporting events in the world, as it pits two star-filled teams against each other to determine the best of the season. As such, we bet there'll always be some unforgettable plays, but these are the most significant moments yet.
